Reuters: IPOX® Research Associate Lukas Muehlbauer Comments on ADARx IPO Debut and Biotech Market Momentum (Updated)
Reuters first reported that ADARx Pharmaceuticals was targeting a valuation of up to $1.74 billion in its U.S. IPO, as the RNA-based drug developer sought to raise as much as $371.9 million through an offering of 21.9 million shares priced between $15 and $17. AbbVie also agreed to invest up to $100 million in a concurrent private placement, following an earlier research collaboration with ADARx. IPOX® Associate Lukas Muehlbauer told Reuters ahead of the offering that AbbVie’s investment provided external validation of ADARx’s technology and helped distinguish the company in a selective biotech IPO market.
Muehlbauer also noted that investors were continuing to favor biotech companies with later-stage assets, identifiable clinical catalysts and exposure to areas of strong pharmaceutical demand. He highlighted the role of large pharmaceutical companies’ appetite for external innovation in supporting sentiment across the sector, particularly as acquisitions can provide another potential route to investor returns despite elevated interest rates. “Sentiment has also been helped by big pharma's appetite for external innovation,” Muehlbauer told Reuters.
Following ADARx’s public-market debut, Muehlbauer commented again to Reuters as the company’s shares opened 30% above their IPO price. In an updated report, Reuters said ADARx raised $446.3 million in an upsized IPO after selling 26.3 million shares at $17, the top end of its marketed range and above its earlier plan to sell 21.9 million shares. The shares opened at $22.10. AbbVie’s concurrent investment of up to $100 million is expected to give the pharmaceutical company a roughly 4.9% stake following the IPO.
Commenting after the company began trading, Muehlbauer said AbbVie’s backing and ADARx’s clinical profile contributed to the offering’s appeal.
“Having AbbVie as a prominent backer made the company stand out, with the external validation adding to the appeal alongside its Phase 3 lead drug, with top-line trial data expected by the end of 2027,” he told Reuters.
Muehlbauer also reiterated that investor selectivity remains an important feature of the biotech IPO market: “On the biotech IPO pipeline, investors are still being selective, focusing on companies with more mature clinical assets and enough cash to reach key catalyst milestones.”
He added that ADARx’s broader development platform was another differentiating factor: “ADARx also benefits from having a broader platform that could support multiple programs, rather than depending on the success of just one or two assets.”
